Foot Notes

Got Gout?
February 26 , 2008 - Morning Call Article

Changes in diet, including overindulging in certain foods and beverages, can cause gout attacks. Extremely painful, attacks are caused when uric acid accumulates in the tissues of a joint and crystallizes. This most commonly occurs in the big toe, because the toe is the coolest part of the body and uric acid is sensitive to temperature.

Foods high in purines contribute to uric acid build-up. People prone to gout should avoid shellfish, shrimp and crab; organ meats such as kidney or liver; red meat; red wine, and beer.

Gout can be treated with medications, diet changes, appropriate liquids and immobilizing the foot. In extreme cases, surgery is required.

Dr. Adam Teichman is a board qualified podiatric foot and ankle surgeon with East Penn Foot and Ankle Associates.
