Foot Notes
Feet Have Stress Too
March 20, 2007 - Morning Call Article
When athletes overdo their workouts, it may be normal to experience some temporary discomfort. Athletes of all ages can develop foot pain and injuries from the repetitive loading of the foot and ankle during running and aerobics. Playing with pain might be viewed as a badge of honor, but athletes who continue to do so risk potential complications that could put them on the sidelines for months.
If pain continues more than a few days with redness, warmth or swelling, seeing a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and advice on treatment options is in order. Among possible injuries associated with persistent foot and ankle pain are stress fractures, muscle strains, tendonitis or subtle fractures after inversion ankle sprains.
Adam J. Teichman, DPM, A.A.C.F.A.S., is a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon with a practice in Allentown. He's an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
