Foot Notes
Take Care Of Those Tootsies
October 30 , 2007 - Morning Call Article
Men often resist seeing a doctor, but most foot conditions are easy to treat when diagnosed early.
Here are five foot problems men should never ignore:
Heel pain, often caused by tissue inflammation, also can be fr om a broken bone, tight Achilles tendon or pinched nerve. Medical diagnosis assures a proper remedy.
Ankle sprains always require a prompt visit to the doctor. Skipping medical care may lead to more ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability.
Big toe stiffness and pain develops slowly as cartilage in the toe joint wears down, eventually leading to arthritis, but early treatment helps.
Achilles tendonitis, pain and tenderness on the back of the foot or heel, usually develops from a sudden increase in physical activity, such as weekend sports. Treatment reduces chances of an Achilles tendon rupture.
Ingrown toenails can pierce the skin and open the door for bacteria to enter the body. Instead of dangerous ''bathroom surgery,'' a quick medical procedure can end pain and permanently cure an ingrown nail.
Dr. Adam Teichman is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and practices with East Penn Foot and Ankle Associates in Allentown and Phillipsburg.
