Foot Notes
Smart Shoes For Kids
October 2 , 2007 - Morning Call Article
After a summer of bare feet and sandals, choose your children's shoes with care.
A child's foot can grow a size or two in six months, so allow room for growth -- about a finger's width from the longest toe.
Toes should flex easily and the shoe should not bend in the middle of the sole.
Snug shoes cause blisters, corns, calluses, ingrown nails and possible infection. Don't assume new, tight shoes will stretch or break in over time. Conversely, loose shoes can slide the foot forward and put excessive pressure on the toes.
Children with flat feet should have oxford, lace-up shoes with a wide toe, arch support and shock absorption and enough depth for an orthotic insert, if necessary.
Worn-out, non-supportive shoes elevate the risk for heel pain, Achilles tendonitis and even ankle sprains and stress fractures.
